Exhibition entitled, Clear Seeing Place: The Encapsulating Canvases of Brian Rutenberg, to be presented at the Saginaw Art Museum from March 10 through June 3, 2017

Saginaw, Michigan – The exhibition at the Saginaw Art Museum from March 10-June 3, 2017 features twenty-four paintings and five works on paper, and examines the career of New York-based artist Brian Rutenberg. These works, produced between 1993 and 2016, are on temporary loan to the Saginaw Art Museum from Forum Gallery in New York, with a few selections from the Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina.

As indicated by the title, Clear Seeing Place serves to illustrate the ideas and themes presented in Rutenberg’s recently published autobiography, Clear Seeing Place: Studio Visits, which is on sale now in the Saginaw Art Museum Shop for $10 (tax not included). A self-professed Southern landscape painter, Rutenberg explores the notions of lucidity and authenticity of place, as well as the spatial relationships of one’s surroundings through abstraction. His compositions, constructed as portals which at once compress and accelerate time and space, enable the viewer to interact with the creator through pure intention. Rejecting the idea of his paintings as precious luxuries, Rutenberg embraces the act of painting itself as communicative grandiosity.

“We are thrilled to be hosting the Clear Seeing Place: The Encapsulating Canvases of Brian Rutenberg exhibition at the Saginaw Art Museum,” said Stacey Gannon, Executive Director of the Saginaw Art Museum. “This exhibition presents a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the contemporary art world that thrives in New York City, and allows them to glimpse the natural world through Rutenberg’s unparalleled vision of place. It also exemplifies the quality of world-class exhibitions we are committed to bringing to the Great Lakes Bay Region.”

To compliment the Clear Seeing Place: The Encapsulating Canvases of Brian Rutenberg exhibition, the Saginaw Art Museum will be hosting an opening celebration at a FREE WNEM After Hours event on March 10th from 6-8pm, at which the exhibiting artist will be present! Saginaw Art Museum has also arranged for a lecture and book signing by Brian Rutenberg on March 11th from 1-3pm. The lecture is free to attend, with books available for purchase in the museum shop. Visitors may also bring their own books to have signed.

The Saginaw Art Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday, 12pm-5pm, additional hours for events and programming. Visit www.saginawartmuseum.org for additional hours. For more information please call 989-754-2491.
