Chippewa Nature Center to Host ‘Discover the Homestead Farm’ through Sept 3

WHEN: Every Sunday May 28-Sept 3, 2017 • 1-5 pm
WHERE: Chippewa Nature Center, 400 S. Badour Rd., Midland
WHO: All Ages
ADMISSION: Free

Step back in time and ‘Discover the Homestead Farm’ at Chippewa Nature Center (CNC) for a family-friendly afternoon, Sundays May 28-September 3 from 1-5 pm. Staff and volunteers will be on hand at the log cabin and one-room schoolhouse to answer your questions, give tours of the farm and teach lessons from long ago. Kids of all ages can try activities such as grinding corn, pumping water, making rope and playing historic games. Experience Midland’s rural heritage with sights and smells of woodstove cooking, heirloom gardens and farm animals. Ring the bell, use a slate board and enjoy recess at the log schoolhouse to complete your trip to the past.

Leicester (pronounced ‘lester’) Longwool sheep, a rare heritage breed with fewer than 2,000 globally, are generously loaned to CNC by The Lavender Fleece Farm & Studio in Midland. Also at the Homestead Farm are a pair of pigs, a cow and chickens.

Plants in the vegetable garden are mostly heirloom varieties. Thousands of heirloom fruits and vegetables have gone extinct over the past century. Some estimates say only 3% of flower and vegetable varieties grown in the U.S. in 1900 are still in existence today. Visitors will be amazed at the shapes, colors and sizes of the fruits and vegetables.

In the one-room log schoolhouse, children of all ages will enjoy stepping into a 19th classroom, writing on slate boards and paging through McGuffey’s Readers. Visitors can try walking on stilts, playing graces and rolling hoops in the schoolyard.

The Homestead and Schoolhouse will be open for Discover the Homestead Farm free of charge Sundays, May 28- September 3 from 1-5 pm. For more information, visit www.chippewanaturecenter.org.
