Credit Union Plus Announces Name Change to Great Lakes Federal Credit Union to Reflect Expanded Membership Eligibility

BAY CITY, Michigan, July 10, 2017 - Downtown Bay City’s only credit union, Credit Union Plus, announced today that it is changing its name to Great Lake Federal Credit Union (GLFCU). The name change reflects the credit union’s recent federal charter which allows GLFCU to expand its membership to include anyone who lives, works, or worships in Bay, Tuscola, Midland, Gladwin Counties, Taymouth and Birch Run Townships, among other benefits.

“This federal charter allows us to better respond to the evolving needs of our community. With our new changes and expanded membership we have made ourselves more accessible,” said Justin Ebel, CEO of Great Lakes Federal Credit Union. “While our name and our look may be new, we remain committed to helping each of our members achieve their own personal definition of financial success, a commitment we have kept for the past 80 years.”

The name change is effective immediately and will be implemented across GLFCU’s products and services throughout the year. Announced in conjunction with the name change, the credit union is introducing a new logo inspired by Michigan’s Great Lakes. With an overall clean, modern feel, the logo’s bold font relays the stability of GLFCU and the wave motion is a nod to the Great Lakes.

“As a credit union with deep roots in the Great Lakes Bay community, we offer many of the same conveniences you’d expect from a bank, such as mobile check deposit and 24/7 banking,” said Keith Markstrom, who has been involved with various boards at the credit union for twenty-five years. “But we’re able to provide our services with lower fees and better rates because we are a member-owned, not-for-profit organization. Many of the products we offer are designed to help our members better understand and manage their personal finances.”

To complement its new logo, GLFCU plans to introduce the slogan “Discover Your Worth” into its communications and membership materials.

“We wanted to convey an empowering message to our members,” said Ebel. “At GLFCU, you are not just a number. We value each member equally, regardless of the size of your savings account or the number on your paycheck.”

GLFCU welcomes those who feel disillusioned with their current financial institution, those who have struggled with access to mainstream financial services, and anyone who wants to feel more financially empowered and to make a positive impact on their community.

“If you're feeling like you don't matter at your current financial institution because of how many zeroes are on your account balance, come to us and we'll help you discover your worth,” said Ebel.
